Gender Differences in School Effects on Adolescent Life Satisfaction: Exploring Cross-National Variation

Abstract Background Levels and drivers of adolescent life satisfaction (LS) vary across nations. School is known to be an important aspect affecting LS, but there are gender differences in how schools may influence LS. However, little about these countries. Objective A series statistical analyses (bivariate associations, multilevel regression, Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition analyses) using PISA 2015 data on 15-year-old students 33 Method Results Girls report lower overall LS than boys average all the countries studied. Various cross-national patterns emerge regarding role schools. Although school a domain which experiences related tend more negative among girls (mainly via bullying relationships with teachers), opposite observed for few school-related factors (notably anxiety). Furthermore, some countries, gap varies schools, suggests that would play shaping students’ different ways boys. Despite patterns, substantial cross-country variation also observed. Conclusion The study benefit from nuanced approaches account cross-cultural promote subjective well-being ways.
